Liverpool & West Ham battle over wonderkid Martin Odegaard

Liverpool and West Ham United are set to do battle over Real Madrid’s teenage prodigy, Martin Odegaard, 17.

The Norwegian has been told he can leave the Bernabeu on a season-long loan deal and the Premier League clubs are both considering the youngster as part of their squad strengthening options.

West Ham’s need is greater with Manuel Lanzini missing until the end of September with a knee injury. The Hammers have spluttered in the transfer market this summer, frustrated at almost every turn as Slaven Bilic seeks to add to his squad to cope with the demands of the Europa League next season.

Liverpool are set to return to Sporting Lisbon with an improved bid for Joao Mario, 23, having been rebuffed earlier in the summer with a £33.5m bid.

Real Madrid, Paris St. Germain and Inter Milan are in the hunt for the Portuguese midfielder who was pivotal in his country’s Euro 2016 triumph.

Against that level of competition, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is willing to consider Odegaard as an alternative.

The Norwegian prodigy was the cause of a recent spat between Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid Florentino Perez, with the latter insisting that Odegaard be included in the Spanish club’s squad for their friendlies in America.
