Manchester United have all but given up on signing Nemanja Matic, 28, with Chelsea unwilling to deal with a club they perceive as title rivals. It’s left United looking at Spurs midfielder, Eric Dier, 23, as the alternative.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen his midfield with reports of Barcelona interest in Ander Herrera. The 27-year-old Spanish international was a pivotal member of the United midfield which tasted domestic and European cup glory.
Dier has long been on top clubs radar. Tony Adams told Arsenal about the former Sporting Lisbon before he moved to White Hart Lane and since then, it’s claimed United have been monitoring the England international.
The Red Devils are determined to sign Dier but have lined up Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl, 21, in case Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, makes unrealistic demands. United know him to be a tough negotiator but one who is willing to make deals for his players. It’s believed Levy values the Cheltenham-born midfielder at £50m, reflecting this summer’s inflated transfer market.
Spurs wage structure leaves them vulnerable to rivals whose pockets are deeper. The new White Hart Lane stadium is designed to improve their finances but if Arsenal’s experience is a yardstick, the Lilywhites face a difficult few years ahead.
