Manchester United made to wait over Zlatan Ibrahimovic transfer

The summer’s most dramatic transfer story will have to wait. Having told the watching press to expect an announcement on 8th June, Zlatan Ibrahimovic didn’t disappoint. Except the 34 year-old Swede wasn’t confirming his intention to join Manchester United but instead announced his new clothing range.

Plans to re-join his “good friend”, Jose Mourinho, at Old Trafford are on hold as he waits for a bonus payment from his current club, Paris St. Germain. It seems that if the Swede announces his intentions before the end of this month, he forfeits a loyalty payment worth £4m.

It was the Portuguese manager’s intention to herald his new era in charge with a headline-grabbing deal but that will now fall to the signing of Eric Bailly, 22, from Villarreal. The Ivory Coast international has passed a medical and is now waiting for contracts to be finalised.

Questions have been asked about United signing a player who has yet to make 100 first team appearances for such a big fee. However, since joining Villarreal, the central defender’s reputation has grown to the extent that he is one of La Liga’s most coveted players.

Mourinho is ready to take Bailly under his wing and help turn him into a world-class defender, hoping to quickly silence his critics by shoring up a creaking defence. Bailly’s arrival will allow the unsettled Daley Blind, 26, to leave with Ajax keen to bring their former defender home.
