Reigning Serie A champions – and soon-to-be-crowned-again league winners – Juventus might have enjoyed another impressive season at the domestic and European level, but the team knows they have to improve defensively, especially since both Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini past their prime.
Therefore, the Italian champions are already looking at alternatives to pair with the likes of Mehdi Benatia and Daniele Rugani ahead of the upcoming season, and two names that have surfaced as potential possibilities are Atletico Madrid‘s defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin, according to Tuttosport.
Out of these two players, however, the one with the bigger chance to join the Serie A giants is Gimenez, since he has been in Juve’s radar for quite a while, and hasn’t been able to become a clear-cut starter due to the presence of Stefan Savic. Plus, he is the younger option of the two (he’s only 23, so he could be a building block going forward), and the Bianconeri side could be open to start negotiations for a potential transfer.
That doesn’t mean that Juventus should discard Godin, though. The Uruguay international might be 32, but has a ton of experience and has emerged as one of Atletico’s key players in the recent stretch that has led the team to two UEFA Champions League and two UEFA Europa League titles (since he wasn’t with the team for the first one).
Juventus do not seem concerned by the player’s advanced age, so a move for him could be on the cards as well.
