Borussia Dortmund are coming off a 2-3 loss to Real Madrid this past Wednesday, and there is no secret the team is looking for defensive reinforcements looking towards the January transfer window.
One of the potential alternatives is Manuel Akanji, a Swiss international and current FC Basel defender who is likely to receive offers in the coming months to make the jump to a more competitive league.
There is a lot of speculation regarding the future of Akanji, and Basel have said they “expect to receive offers” for the 22-year-old defender. The rumour mill indicates he is a target for Borussia Dortmund, as the Bundesliga giants have struggled to show any sort of defensive consistency during the current campaign.
For what is worth, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc sent scouts to watch Akanji in Basel’s match vs Manchester United last months, and several outlets in Germany – such as Kicker and Blick – have indicated the Bundesliga giants are keen to make a January move for the Swiss international.
Akanji is under contract until 2021, but Basel sporting director Marcel Streller has revealed that the team is open to a sale of the defender. Akanji has also been linked with a move to RB Leipzig as well.
“We’ll receive [offers], I am sure of that,” Streller told Blick. “I see which scouts attend our Champions League matches. If we’ll receive a concrete offer, we must sit down with him and his agent to see what’s best for Manu.”
Dortmund have struggled badly in defence this season, as they have conceded 31 goals in 15 matches in all competitions, registering just one clean sheet over that span. Akanji would certainly boost the team’s depth defensively, and would represent an upgrade over current in-house alternatives such as Neven Subotic and Marc Bartra.
