Real Madrid’s calamitous summer in the transfer window shows no sign of ending with Zinedine Zidane at loggerheads with club president Florentino Perez over whom they should sign for midfield.
The French coach is determined to sign Nemanja Matic, 28, whilst Perez is keen to bring Moussa Sissoko, 26, to the Bernabeu.
Both players are bracketed as £34-36m signings with Newcastle United resolute in their determination to to let the French midfielder leave for less than the higher amount.
If says much about the respective philosophies of the Real Madrid power-brokers. Zidane was impressed by Matic’s performance in the recent pre-season friendly against Chelsea. The value of a powerful defensive barrier was obvious to the coach.
Perez on the other hand, sees a crowd pleasing goalscorer. A creator to keep the Madrid faithful appeased. Sissoko’s stock rose at Euro 2016 rose and so did his price; the Magpies were content to sell the French international for £22m before the tournament began.
Tellingly, Madrid aren’t signing both. They are expected to return to Bayern Munich with an improved bid for David Alaba, 25, having seen the German champions reject a €60m offer last week.
Gone are the days, it seem, when the Real bank manager thought nothing of sanctioning spend of £100m+ in the transfer window.
