Barcelona Searching For Alternatives To Bolster Their Midfield

FC Barcelona were reportedly interested in securing the services of Marco Verratti this summer. However, PSG declared they are not going to sell their star midfielder, and it seems Barcelona have backed out of a potential deal.

This does not mean Los Blaugranas are done in the transfer market, though. Barcelona’s directors know they need to add at least one midfielder to strengthen the side, and are already active in the market looking for alternatives. And four names have already been linked with a move to Camp Nou Stadium in the coming months.

These four names are Ander Herrera, Jean-Michaël Seri, Oriol Romeu, and Paulinho.

Paulinho has been the one getting more press, and he is also the only one Barcelona have already made an offer. However, Guangzhou Evergrande have rejected the two bids made for his services, and it seems the Brazil international will not leave the Chinese Super League this summer.

Herrera would be the player who might fit better in Barcelona, because he already knows Ernesto Valverde and has experience in LaLiga. But Jose Mourinho rates the midfielder highly, and it has been reported the Portuguese tactician would not allow Ander to leave Manchester United any time soon.

Oriol and Seri are clearly behind the two aforementioned players in the pecking order, but that does not mean they would not do a proper job. Romeu already knows what is like to play for Barcelona since he was a youngster in the club, while Seri is a reported transfer target for AS Roma and is certain to leave Nice this summer. Both are valued at around 25 million.

Verratti might not land at Camp Nou, but don’t expect Barcelona to stand pat in the market. Not after Real Madrid won both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League last season.
