The Red Devils hope that the deal can be sealed in time for the 24-year-old to fly to Los Angeles as part of their pre-season tour. Personal terms still have to be finalised as well as holding a medical so the clock is ticking for Sunday’s departure
It was a surprise move by United, who were previously heavily linked with Real Madrid’s Alvarao Morata, 24. The two clubs were thought to be close to Los Merengues €80m valuation but the move for Lukaku leaves the Spanish international in limbo.
The Belgian is still sought by Chelsea but with strenuous denials from the player and no offer to Everton, United stole a march on the Blues. Lukaku has stated in the past that he feels there is “unfinished business” in south-west London and with this move, it is surely set to remain that way.
Meanwhile, Everton and United are in talks over 31-year-old Wayne Rooney returning to his spiritual home, Goodison Park. Sources close to the deal claim it could be done and dusted by Sunday with Paul Stretford, Rooney’s agent, meeting Toffees chairman, Bill Kenwright, yesterday to agree personal terms.
