Manchester United have identified their top priority for the upcoming 2018-19 season, as the team is set to make a splash to bolster their defensive line. And Jose Mourinho wants Raphael Varane as the man to lead the team’s defence for years to come.
Mourinho might get his wish granted, though. According to a report from Diario Gol, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez would be open to accept a €60 million bid for the services of the French international. The Red Devils would be keen to pay that amount, especially considering the latest market rates that have seen increases on the price for defenders at a steady rate.
The 24-year-old centre-back certainly fits the mold of what Mou wants for United, though. Aside from the fact that he is quite young and years away from reaching his prime, he knows what is like to play for a top team. He has registered 25 appearances for Real Madrid this season across all competitions, and has emerged as a key piece for Los Blancos in the past years.
His playing style is a joy to watch as well. Varane is extremely quick, strong and good in the air, and boasts considerable experience at top level despite his relatively young age. He would form an excellent partnership next to Eric Bailly, and these two could give United a world-class centre-back pairing that hasn’t been present in United since the Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand days.
