The wantaway Arsenal striker is Guardiola’s top target as the Spaniard prepares his squad for the assault on four trophies. Recent matches saw Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne suffer injuries and the Spaniard is concerned that their season could unravel as the matches come thick and fast.
With the return of the Champions League, City could find themselves playing two games per week for the rest of the season, particularly with the club odds-on to reach the Carabao Cup final.
Bookmakers believe the deal is a certainty, with odds of 5/6 on for Sanchez’s move to City to be sealed in the January window.
While City’s directors prefer to wait until next summer when the Chilean is available on a free transfer, Guardiola hopes to convince them otherwise. Interest from Paris St-Gerrmain may force their hand for the player they thought they had signed in a £60m deal last summer.
With Sergio Aguero openly talking of returning to Argentina at the end of his contract or -even sooner if the right offer comes along, signing the 29-year-old Chilean insures Guardiola against that loss.
City are reluctant to meet Arsenal’s £25m price tag, but PSG’s offers last month for the striker may change their minds on the matter. The Gunners are prepared to retain Sanchez if a suitable offer isn’t received in time for them to sign a replacement.
That may mean City must act sooner rather than later in the window.
