FC Barcelona spent most of the summer transfer window looking to sign Neymar and when they decided to look for potential alternatives, it was either too late or players were too expensive. Apparently, that’s what happened when they went after Lucas Moura.
According to several reports across Europe, Los Blaugranas made an approach for Tottenham forward Lucas Moura before the European transfer window closed. However, the Spurs knew how important Lucas was for them last season and they slapped Barca with a £50m price tag for the Brazilian.
Understandably, Barca did not want to continue the talks and everything stalled. Neymar is still at PSG, Moura is still at Tottenham, and Barcelona “only” managed to sign Antoine Griezmann this summer. Adding Neymar would have definitively put them over the top in the race for the UEFA Champions League title.
However, adding Lucas wouldn’t have been the smartest idea for Barca. When Griezmann, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi are all fit, there’s not going to be enough space for the Brazilian. Especially if we also throw Ousmane Dembele and – potentially – youngsters such as Carles Perez and Ansu Fati into the mix.
Sometimes, the best businesses are the ones you don’t make. And this might very well be the case for Barcelona.
