Chelsea have completed the signing of Michy Batshuayi, 22. The Belgian international has signed a five-year deal after the west London club paid Marseille €40m. It’s vital money for the French club which prevents a transfer ban being imposed by the DNCG, which regulates the finances of Ligue Un clubs.
He was a bit-part player as Belgium under-achieved at Euro 2016, crashing out in a 1–3 defeat to Wales. Batshuayi scored against Hungary, scuffing the ball into the net with his first touch of the ball as a second half substitute.
West Ham, Crystal Palace and Juventus had all tabled bids for the striker but Chelsea, alerted to his availability, acted decisively and offered significantly more money for his services than their rivals. The player passed his medical over the weekend and signed yesterday.
His arrival signals the beginning of a major shake-up at Stamford Bridge. Former French international Loic Remy, 29, is set to be the first to leave. Interest in China has yet to result in firm offers for the player whose career stagnate under Mourinho and Hiddink.
Meanwhile, Diego Costa, 27, has attracted attention from his former club Atletico Madrid, who have held exploratory talks with Chelsea over re-signing the unsettled Spanish international. Diego Simeone has identified him as his priority striking target this summer but has also enquired about Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, 28.
