News that Barcelona are targeting potential alternatives to Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, 25, opened the way for Real Madrid to make a move for the Brazilian, according to the Daily Mirror.

Barcelona tried in vain to capture the Reds talismanic player during the summer, with a proposed fee climbing to £132m. However, such is Coutinho’s determination to move to the Camp Nou that Liverpool are contemplating reaching a deal in January.

Barcelona remain 3/1 favourites to sign Coutinho the Merseysiders are ready to sell him amid reports that the fee will be significantly less than last summer.

Their bitter rivals Real Madrid are looking at strengthening their squad in the wake of a poor start to their season.

Los Blancos are already eight points adrift of Barcelona in the league and following Wednesday night’s humiliation at Tottenham, it’s likely they will finish second in their Champions League group.

Last season, they were runners-up to Dortmund in the group stage but went on to win the competition.

Real are keen to make a move for Coutinho but are inclined to wait until next summer. However, if the opportunity to make the deal happen beforehand arose, the funding is available to Zidane – if he remains coach – to strengthen the squad.

Coutinho is believed to favour a move to the Camp Nou. However, PSG are also lurking in the background with Neymar Jr, his Brazilian international team-mate, keen for the midfielder to move to the Parc Des Princes.
