Rooney Set For Everton Return?

The hairline may be thinner and the waistline a little wider but Everton fans would welcome the return of prodigal son, Wayne Rooney. And this summer, talkSPORT claims, the dream will come true.

No longer an automatic choice in the Manchester United starting line-up, the England captain is concerned that his place in the World Cup 2018 squad will be impacted by another season on the bench for his club.

Leaving Old Trafford would be a wrench but a return to Goodison Park will take him back to familiar territory. Rumours of his departure from United have never subsided since he played a game of ‘Chicken’ with the club over his contract renewal in February 2014.

During the previous summer, he was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom were willing to pay the wages demanded.

Rooney stayed at Old Trafford and is now Manchester United’s leading goalscorer, with 253 goals in 599 appearances. Sir Bobby Charlton held that record and Rooney nabbed his international record, currently shifting it along to 53 goals in his 119 caps.

He made 77 appearances for Everton before moving to United in 2004 but returning would be a major coup for new owner, Farhad Moshiri, and manager, Ronald Koeman.

The Toffees have already signed Davy Klaessen from Ajax, and England Under-21 goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford. Michael Keane and Sandro Ramirez will complete their moves to Merseyside this week, bringing the club’s spend close to £100m this summer, with the promise of more to come.
