With Manchester United enjoying a busy weekend in the transfer market by completing the signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 34, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 27, neighbours Manchester City are preparing their own headline-making deals.
New manager Pep Guardiola will be officially unveiled tomorrow but has already identified Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, 26, and Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, 29, as targets. Neither player will come cheap and with United prepared to pay up to £110m for Paul Pogba, 23, the price for both may rise sharply.
Kroos worked with Guardiola at Bayern for twelve months before moving for the Spanish capital. The mutual respect never died and despite having no immediate plans to leave Real Madrid, is not averse to re-joining his old boss.
Persuading the 2016 Champions League winners to sell will depend on them beating United to Pogba’s signature. If they succeed, Kroos will be sold for around £63m to help fund the raid on the Juventus star.
Suarez meanwhile, will prove more difficult to land. Whilst he is not averse to a return to the Premier League, his family are settled in Spain and that could prove as big an obstacle as Barcelona’s unwillingness to sell.
However, agitating for a move is second nature to the modern player and if Suarez is determined enough to leave, there is a deal to be done.
