The youngster is rated as one of the hottest prospects in Greek football and is set for talks with Arsenal in London ahead of completing a £2.2m move to the Emirates.
His capture in the face of stiff competition from Greek giants Olympiakos would be a coup for the newly-appointed head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who joined last year from Borussia Dortmund.
Mislintat and his scouts became aware of the centre-back whilst in Dortmund and had successfully recruited from the country before with Sokratis.
Local journalist Thodoris Vasilis claimed that the deal will be the biggest in the club’s history. “In terms of what the deal means for PAS Giannina, it’s huge. £2m may not sound like a lot to those who follow the major European leagues but it will be the biggest in the club’s history. The deal is like Neymar joining Paris Saint-Germain – yes, that big”
Hyperbole aside, Mavropanos made his full debut just over a year ago but has scored three times in his sixteen appearances. He has also been capped twice by Greece at Under-21 level.
Arsenal are expected to loan Mavropanos for six months before introducing him into the first team squad next season.
