What started as a rumour ended becoming a reality sooner than what anyone could have expected. Even though Chelsea were heavily linked – and considered front-runners – to sign Christian Pulisic, they weren’t expected to make a heavy push for the USMNT international. But that’s exactly what happened.
Per several reports, The Blues have completed the signature of the talented (and now former) Dortmund attacking midfielder. Pulisic, 20, is expected to be the long-term replacement for Eden Hazard in case the Belgian leaves the club and Chelsea certainly have faith in him, as evidenced by the €64million they ended paying for his services.
It remains to be seen how Pulisic will adapt to the Premier League, though, since he was coming off a somewhat down year with the German side. The American lost his place in the starting XI due to Marco Reus’ recovery and Jadon Sancho’s emergence, so he was being as an alternative off the bench for manager Lucien Favre.
As for Chelsea, this shows they are getting prepared to let Hazard leave if a good offer arrives. It’s one thing to have the Belgian under a massive release clause, but another one is to already have his potential replacement. Chelsea are still not keen to part ways with their star player, but this could give the sides tracking the Belgian a boost on their chances on a potential transfer.
