Like all good boy scouts, Barcelona are prepared for every eventuality. The closing of the transfer window in England means nothing to them save for beginning the 24-hour countdown to the end of Spain’s Deadline Day.
Their major target is Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, 25, but in readiness for failing to seal that deal, the Blaugrana are willing to move onto the next name on their hitlist: Mesut Ozil, according to Cadena Cope.
Aware of Liverpool’s entrenched refusal to sell the Brazilian international, Barcelona are desperate to bring in a marquee signing this summer. They missed out on Kylian Mbappe, 18, and Thomas Lemar, 21, when the two French players chose very different futures.
The former’s controversial deal with PSG has drawn ire from most of Europe’s leading clubs while the latter turned down a move to Arsenal yesterday which had a knock-on effect in the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Ozil, 28, is out of contract next summer but Barcelona are still willing to pay a big transfer fee to land the German World Cup winner this summer. Having seen the farcical attempts by Manchester City to land Alexis Sanchez, 28, the Catalans are determined to seal a swift deal with the Gunners, by offering €60m.
It’s thought they will meet the same resistance to sell. As with Liverpool, the closure of the English transfer window means Arsenal cannot replace their influential midfielder. It’s highly unlikely they will be tempted to sell unless the price is too good to resist.
