At least one deal went smoothly for Chelsea during this transfer window! The Blues landed Torino‘s right back Davide Zappacosta in a £25m move which lessened Antonio Conte’s frustration this summer, reports the Daily Mail.
The Italian international completed his medical and the formalities this afternoon before rejoining the Azzurri squad for this weekend’s World Cup Qualifying matches. The 25-year-old knows Conte well from the Chelsea boss’ time in charge of his country. He gave Zappacosta his debut in 2015.
Since taking over at Stamford Bridge, Conte has scoured his homeland for commanding defenders who could bring even more discipline to the parsimonious backline he has constructed. Zappacosta is a full back rather than the central defender he craved but knows the preferred 3-4-3 formaiton well.
It’s been a transfer window Conte will try to forget after missing out on just about every major target the club has been linked with in recent weeks. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Barkley both left Chelsea in the lurch after the champions thought deals were agreed while Spurs hijacked Llorente. Lukaku and Danilo both opted to move to Manchester instead of south-west London.
Those failures led to claims that Conte was set to return to his homeland with Internazionale willing to offer him a £10m per year contract.
However, the Deadline Day may yet turn out to be alright on the night with Zappacosta and Drinkwater completing their moves.
