Saul Niguez was one of Spain’s most important players during the recent U21 European Championship, and there has been a lot of talk of him moving to either Barcelona or Manchester United.
However, Atletico Madrid does not want to hear anything about a potential transfer from their star midfielder, and have made sure the 22-year-old will remain with the club for the foreseeable future. Los Colchoneros have extended Saul’s contract until 2026, gving the playmaker a nine-year deal so he can spend most of his career with Atletico.
Football clubs do not give nine-year deals to anyone, so this is a true testament of how important Saul is for the club. The Spanish playmaker has emerged as one of the most exciting European talents in recent memory, and he was a key player during Atletico’s Champions League run last season.
As expected, Saul was delighted after inking the new deal and once again rubbished the transfer rumours, saying that this is the place where he wants to be.
“I am very happy because at Atletico we are a family and there is no better place to be,” Saul said in a statement on the club website.
Saul was the top scorer for Spain in the U21 European Championship with five goals, and also contributed with nine goals in 53 appearances for Atletico across all competitions in 2016-17.
