Arsenal will strengthen their embattled defence by signing Chelsea defender Gary Cahill when the January transfer window opens according to reports in the Italian media.
Newsmondo broke the news which is being given credence as rivals pick up on the story that the 33-year-old former England international is moving across London. Arsenal crashed 5 – 1 at Anfield to league leaders Liverpool with a defensive display which is kindly described as shambolic.
The Gunners tried to sign Cahill before he left Bolton Wanderers in 2012. However, then Trotter’s owner Phil Gartside was left fuming by the attitude of the Arsenal negotiating team and refused to sell Cahill to the North Londoners. Six months later, he signed for Chelsea for the same £7m Arsenal offered.
A loan move to his first club Aston Villa, fell through for Cahill when the Championship promotion hopefuls couldn’t agree personal terms.
Arsenal are desperate for defensive reinforcements. Rob Holding proved their most consistent defender during the first half of this season but the former Bolton man succumbed to an ACL injury. In his absence, Unai Emery has seen his defensive game plan disintegrate through incompetence.
The Gunners hope the arrival of Cahill will provide a calming influence on the training ground as well as the pitch. With the defence reeling from point-dropping mistakes in successive games, Emery is desperate to bolster his resources for the second half of his debut season at the club.
