The 26-year-old’s decision to move to Atletico Madr on loan was disappointing for the Andalusian side. They are, however, swiftly moving on to a new target, namely Manchester United striker Anthony Martial.
The France international was odds-on to leave Old Trafford whilst Jose Mourinho remained in charge of United. However, the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put a different complexion on his situation. Martial, 23, is mulling over extending his stay with the club but the opportunity of a fresh start in Seville may prove too strong to turn down.
Previously, a move to Southern Spain might have been unthinkable from a club of United’s stature. However, Sevilla’s re-emergence as challengers for the top four places in La Liga may change the striker’s mind.
It’s a long way from his £36m move from AS Monaco in September 2015 when Martial became the most expensive teenager in football history. His original deal expires in 2019 but United hold an option to extend his contract by another year which the club is likely to take up so that they can, at the very least, recoup some of the fee paid for him.
