In a surprising admission, Juventus admitted that signing Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, 24, is far from certain, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It’s been one of the season’s enduring transfer drama’s, but this unexpected twist offers the Merseyside club hope that the Germany international may yet sign a new deal.

His contract expires this summer and the presumption for the past several months that Can would leave Anfield after the World Cup. However, the Bianconeri general manager Guiseppe Marotta declared, “We are periodically pointed to as a club that buys players. We have a squad suited to three tournaments and it meets our need.”

“We’re ready to take any opportunities,” he said. “I won’t deny we are concentrated on Emre Can and awaiting his response. That is our primary objective.”

Can has instructed his agent to stop all negotiations while the season is ongoing, preferring to concentrate on Liverpool’s campaign for the Champions League with the all-English quarter-final tie with Manchester City capturing everyone’s attention.

Juventus are not putting all their eggs in one basket, however. Marotta underlined that they would not be held to ransom.

“If there is a negative response,” the Juve official said, “we’ll move our attention on to other players.”
