Ahead of the Champions League meeting with Tottenham, defending holders Real Madrid have let it be known their intentions of signing Harry Kane are genuine, according to the Daily Mirror.

Los Merengues, previously reluctant to become embroiled in a bidding war over the England captain, have let it be known they are prepared to spend big money to land the 24-year-old.

Tottenham, according to The Times, want £200m, taking the fee to a shade over that paid by PSG for Neymar Jr, 26, in the summer.

Currently third in the Premier League, Tottenham travel to the Bernabeu for a group match in this year’s tournament with Real aiming to become the first club to win the Champions League three years running since UEFA rebranded the competition in 1992.

Madrid don’t have a clear run at Kane. Manchester United, one of the Premier League’s biggest predators, are also in the frame for the 24-year-old’s signature. The Red Devils are determined to sign English football’s leading goalscorer but face an even bigger challenge to persuade Tottenham to sell than Real.

With a new stadium to sell out, chairman Daniel Levy will be reluctant to lose his prized asset. However, the club’s strict adherence to a wage structure which almost precludes title success, is causing genuine problems during negotiations with players.

Kane knows he can treble his wages with Europe’s elite clubs. The question is whether Tottenham can afford to miss out on a fee which is the equivalent of one-quarter of the cost of their new stadium.
