Mesut Özil, 29, is proving to be a transfer riddle, whose future is wrapped in mystery, inside of an enigma, to paraphrase Winston Churchill.

The key the British wartime prime minister sought was Russia’s self-interest; Özil’s is simpler to find: a £300k per week contract.

According to the Daily Mail, the German midfielder is set for a swift departure from the Emirates, news of which comes just days after his agent declared talks with Arsenal were going well and reports of how he would benefit financially from Alexis Sanchez’s departure.

However, knives are being sharpened in the Gunners dressing room with the Mail declaring that team-mates are dismayed at the German’s lackadaisical attitude and lack of physical effort when the XI most needs it.

Özil, it seems, is falling prey to the same sniping as Alexis Sanchez, with the same Arsenal dressing room reported to be upset by the Chilean’s selfishness on the pitch and over-affected public displays of disappointment in defeat.

There’s no hint that the dressing room is looking at itself to see if it is the problem which the 1 – 2 reverse at Watford last weekend certainly suggests to be the case.

Until now, the Gunners had been expected to sell Sanchez as there was very little interest in Özil. However, Besiktas and Inter Milan have both declared an interest in the midfielder leaving the Gunners looking to see if they can cash in on both recalcitrant stars this January.
