Last weekend’s defeat at home to Sassuolo hasn’t dampened the ardour of Inter Milan for the Champions League. And if they reach Europe’s top table, the Nerazzurri are ready to spend money in pursuit of glory, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Top of their list of targets is Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. The 27-year-old was praised for his form as the Citizens strode to the Premier League title, with the Germany international making 30 appearances during their victorious campaign.
Injuries wrought havoc with his career at both Dortmund and City, but his value to the team was easily recognisable during his performances this season. With a wealth of experience in the Champions League, Gundogan’s quality and technique are identified by the Nerazzurri as exactly those missing from their current squad.
They have one small obstacle to overcome. This weekend gives Internazionale one last chance to make the Serie A top four; only a trip to the current incumbents of fourth place Lazio stands between them and return to the glory days.
Whether City are minded to sell Gundogan depends on their summer recruitment. The main target is Jorginho, 26, of Napoli; if he is signed then the path is clear for Internazionale to land their target.
