Dries Mertens, 30, is the latest striker on the radar of Manchester United. The Belgian international is in the form of his life after moving to the centre of the Napoli attack to fill the void left by Gonzalo Higuain’s departure to Juventus in 2015.
Since then, Mertens has hit 43 goals in 56 appearances, including 9 in 11 this season. It’s brought him to the attention of Premier League clubs with Arsenal’s interest aleady registered.
According to Italian media outlet Tuttosport, Manchester United’s name can be added to the list. While the Belgian’s form is enough to tempt the English clubs into showing interest, a release clause of €28m is certainly going to make them prick up their ears.
It’s a long way from Eendracht Aalst, then of the Belgian Third Division, where Mertens began his professional career.
Arsenal’s interest in Mertens remains undimmed with the Gunners viewing him as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez. The 28-year-old Chilean international is still set to leave the Emirates next summer although bookmakers rate the prospect of Manchester City signing Alexis this January at 6/1.
Manchester United, still unsure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future, are looking to strengthen their attack with experience to complement the youth of Anthony Martial, 22, and Marcus Rashford, 19.
