Football throws up strange moves at times and the prospect of Theo Walcott leaving Arsenal for the San Siro is almost up there with Luther Blissett joining AC Milan in the 1980s.
It’s certainly more exotic than the delights of Everton, West Ham or even a return to Southampton. talkSPORT carries claims that Inter Milan are monitoring the former England international’s situation with a view to a January ‘smash and grab’ raid on the Emirates.
The 28-year-old’s status continues to diminish at Arsenal despite their Premier League woes. He netted 19 times in 37 appearances last season, including ten top-flight strikes, with only Alexis Sanchez, also 28, scoring more for the club.
Yet Walcott finds himself reduced to a bit-part player, starting only in the Carabao Cup and Europa League matches. The situation has killed his international career and with England qualifying for Russia 2018, he faces a difficult decision over his Arsenal future.
His relationship with England has been troubled. From the highs of being called up to Germany 2006 as a 16-year-old and a stunning hat-trick in Zagreb to the lows of missing out on every World Cup since.
His contract at Arsenal runs to 2019 but Inter are poised to tempt the Gunners with an offer to push the striker through the exit door.
