The scattergun recruitment policy of Chelsea surfaced once again as the club’s interest in AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain is revived according to a Daily Mail report.

Less than a week after declaring their interest in AFC Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, 26, Maurizio Sarri is turning his attention to the former Juventus man. Higuain is a player he knows well from their time together at Napoli and the 31-year-old’s prolific scoring record.

Milan, the report claims, are still struggling to comply with UEFA’s FFP regulations having fallen foul of them last season. Higuain comes with a hefty wage demand as well as a £16m loan fee payable to the Bianconeri. The Argentine made a shock move out of Turin in a swap with Leonardo Bonucci, 31, following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, last summer.

Chelsea hope to capitalise on the fallen European giant’s hardship by snatching Higuain from the San Siro. The Blues tried to broker a deal last summer but couldn’t agree terms. This time, however, they are confident of reaching agreement with the player, and both Serie A giants.

While his goalscoring form this season is lower than usual – 7 goals in 17 games – it has been enough to propel the Rossoneri into fourth place in Serie A. However, even with the extra money Champions League football brings, it won’t help Milan this season.

Chelsea are poised to make them pay for those problems.
