Manchester United are set for a major loan signing before Thursday’s transfer deadline, claims the Manchester Evening News.

Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans, 21, is the target United identified to add attacking depth to a squad which sits sixth in the Premier League table.

The French club called upon sacked boss Leonardo Jardim after his replacement Thierry Henry failed to improve the club’s fortunes during his three months in charge.

It’s understood Jardim identified Tielemans as surplus to requirements and that the club should cash in on the Belgian before this transfer window closes.

United in common with a number of the European elite are, however, only looking for a loan deal until the end of the season, when an option to buy might be exercised.

Should the Monegasque be determined to pursue a permanent deal, their number of suitors is dwindling.

Barcelona monitored the 21-year-old’s situation but having committed to buy Frenkie de Jong, also 21, on 1st July 2019, are unlikely to take their interest any further.

AC Milan are also keen on a loan deal. However, with FFP considerations given their problems in recent years, the Rossoneri are unlikely to pursue their interest beyond that level.

Which leaves the way clear for Leicester City. Much depends, however, on whether Claude Puel retains his job.

The French manager is under pressure at the King Power after a run of poor form saw them slip into mid-table, as well as suffering a humiliating FA Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Newport County.

Should he be relieved of his post, the club’s interest likely ends as well.
