Arsenal have been looking for a way to extend Mesut Özil, although at the same time, they know they must act quickly if they want to get something for the German international before his contract runs out at the end of the season.
One alternative that had been mentioned of late was a swap with Inter Milan. Arsenal would sent Özil to the Giuseppe Meazza outfit, while The Gunners would get Joao Mario as Özil’s replacement.
On paper it seemed like a fair trade, but Inter did not pull the trigger and are not looking to either acquire Özil or part ways with Joao Mario, claims Calciomercato.
The Portugal international started the season on top form, dishing out three assists in three appeareances for Inter in the Serie A so far. The 24-year-old also played a key role for Portugal in their European Championship victory in 2016 but looks set to stay in Italy for the foreseeable future.
Considering this scenario, Arsenal will have to get creative to get something back for Özil. Time is passing, and the playmaker remains uninsterested in signing a contract extension with the Emirates Stadium outfit. And at this point, the chances of him wearing a difference uniform after the 2018 World Cup keep increasing by the minute.
