Premier League giants Arsenal want to bolster their defensive line next season. The impeding retirement of Per Mertesacker and the poor performances from several players have forced The Gunners to consider making a splash for a defender during the upcoming summer transfer window.

And apparently Arsenal have identified Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez as their top summer transfer target, according to a report from El Gol Digital. The Uruguay international is heralded as one of the top young defenders in Europe, but he hasn’t been able to secure a starting spot with Los Colchoneros this season.

Gimenez joined Atletico Madrid in 2013, and has made well over 110 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone’s team. However, the Uruguayan has not been able to settle down as a starter this season since he has been rotating with Stefan Savic as the second centre-back next to Diego Godin. But Gimenez want to play on a regular basis, and Arsenal could offer him a way out of the Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal’s boss Arsene Wenger are keen to make a move for the Uruguayan, but he is not the only target since The Gunners are also interested to make a move for Lazio star Stefan de Vrij. But since Liverpool have emerged as favourites to sign the Dutch international, Arsenal are set to make a push for the Uruguay star.
