Lazio failed on their quest to reach the UEFA Champions League in the final match of the 2017-18 season, so they will settle with participating in the UEFA Europa League once again. But the management is not happy about that, and have been looking at ways to improve the current squad.
One area Lazio are keen to bolster is their central midfield, especially since Sergej Milinkovic-Savic might leave the club before the end of the current transfer window. And one name that has emerged as a possibility is the one of Milan Badelj.
The Croatia international spent last season playing for Fiorentina, but his deal ended on June 30 and there have not been talks of a potential renewal so he is a free agent. This means that if Lazio agree to terms with him, then he would join the side for free. That would be quite a steal considering the kind of player Badelj.
In fact, reports coming out of Italy have indicated that both parties are progressing smoothly in the negotiations and a deal could be announced soon. Lazio would win the race for Badelj since AC Milan are also interested in him, but Il Biancocelesti would offer a better alternative. It seems it’s only a matter of time before this becomes official.
The 29-year-old, who featured for Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and scored a goal against Iceland, spent the last four years at Fiorentina so he is used to the Serie A pace. That is also a big plus.
