Manchester United launch £30m Julian Draxler transfer bid

Manchester United have launched a £30m bid for Wolfsburg’s Julian Draxler, 22.

New manager, Jose Mourinho, is desperate to strengthen his squad and has been frustrated with Borussia Dortmund’s intransigence over Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 27. The Armenian international’s agent, Mina Raiola, recently threw chairs in rage as the CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, refused to give in to the player’s demands for a move.

It’s left Mourinho scrabbling around Europe’s top leagues as he seeks to improve the creativity in United’s lacklustre attack. Draxler is currently in France with Joachim Löw’s squad for Euro 2016 where he’s made two appearances.

The winger only recently made a surprise move from Schalke 04 to Wolfsburg with long-time admirers, Arsenal, caught on the hop by the transfer. He netted 9 times in his 34 appearances and was, with Andre Schurrle, a driving force as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

United are desperate to improve on last season’s dismal 49 Premier League goals. It was bettered by nine other top flight clubs and for a club whose reputation is for fearless football, nowhere near good enough.

The dreary football served up eventually cost Louis Van Gaal his job as United chiefs feared it would stop them recruiting Europe’s top talents. Appointing Mourinho offers them a quick fix in that sense but the new manager is growing concerned at the ease with which they are being rebuffed as he seeks to make his mark at the club.
