It’s a sign of the turbulence surrounding Manchester United that every day brings not one but several transfer stories. The latest is their interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, 24.
According to a Daily Mirror report, the France international is firmly on the Old Trafford shopping list as Jose Mourinho looks to fashion at title-winning squad out of the club’s bank balance.
Varane was purchased while Mourinho was in charge at the Bernabeu so it is no surprise that he is increasingly turning to players he knows that he can trust to forge the same success he has previously enjoyed.
Manchester United’s success this season has been forged on the back of David De Gea’s brilliance in goal. With Real Madrid intensifying their efforts to tempt Spain’s number one goalkeeper back to La Liga, Mourinho needs more than ever to design a tighter defence.
Losing Eric Bailly to injury also underlined the lack of depth in United’s squad with Danny Blind out of favour before injury struck and Marcos Rojo deemed surplus to requirements.
At £50m, Varane represents a significant investment. United’s desire for the prestige of being Premier League champions again is such that no-one should underestimate their determination in the transfer market.
