Chelsea and Liverpool are set to lock horns on a potential transfer target since both Premier League giants will compete for the signing of Lyon star midfielder Houssem Aouar. The talented playmaker has emerged as a potential January transfer target for both The Blues and The Reds, according to reports in France.

French outlet RMC Sport is suggesting that the 20-year-old French midfielder has been scouted closely by both sides for a while now, but his recent displays have caught the eye and both teams want to seal a deal quickly, before a) other sides enter the race to acquire him and b) becomes more expensive.

Aouar has been compared to former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho and his versatility is quite interesting. He can operate as a n.° 10 or as a central midfielder in an organiser role, but can also play on a wider stance towards the left side of the pitch.

Barcelona are also said to be monitoring the player, but Chelsea look as the favourites since Maurizio Sarri is said to have taken a personal interest in the player.

The midfielder, who rose through Lyon’s youth ranks into the first team, is under contract with Lyon until 2023. He has five goals with four assists in 17 appearances this season.
