It is not a secret that FC Barcelona have been scouting Matthijs de Ligt over the past few months. Los Blaugranas saw the talented Ajax youngster as a potential star in the making, and they saw him as the ideal long-term alternative to bolster the defence in both the short-term and long-term picture.
However, things have changed of late. In fact, a report from Sport has indicated that the interest has cooled down and now the Catalan club would be considering other alternatives to bolster a defensive line that already features Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique, Thomas Vermaelen and Yerry Mina.
The Ajax defender certainly fits the bill, though. He is only 18 years old and is very talented, so there is no question he would be an excellent addition to the side. However, current Ajax sporting director and former Barca winger, Marc Overmars, informed that any side interesting in the defender would have to pay at least €60 million.
That is quite a hefty price tag for an inexperienced player, no matter how talented he is. As such, Barca have decided to pursue other alternatives unless the Dutch giants lower their expectations. Therefore, seeing de Ligt playing at Camp Nou might not happen in the near future.
