Everton are set to table a £30m bid for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, 24.

The Portuguese midfielder, a member of his country’s Euro 2016 winning team, has been linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs in the past, most notably Arsenal. But with the Gunners signing Granit Xhaka, 23, Everton are in pole position to sign Carvalho.

The Toffees are still interested in Axel Witsel, 27, but with Napoli, Internazionale and Premier League champions Leicester City, are looking at other targets to bolster their squad.

New co-owner Farhad Moshiri has vowed to underwrite any summer investment which Koeman thinks is necessary to make Everton Merseyside’s premier club. The Iranian investor has targeted Champions League football as the first step to taking the Toffees back to the top of English football.

With Gareth Barry, 35, his only midfield enforcer, the Dutchman has identified Carvalho as the world-class midfielder he desperately needs. The powerful Angolan-born international has already made over 150 club appearances, including a dozen in Europe.

Carvalho was below par at this summer’s European Championships but a key member of the Sporting Lisbon side which pushed eventual champions Benfica all the way in last season’s Primeira Liga, finishing two points adrift.
