Arsenal’s quest for a new striker has seen them linked with a host of players this summer, including: Gonzalo Higuain, 28; Alexandre Lacazette, 25; Carlos Bacca, 29.
Now it’s the turn of Internazionale’s Argentinian striker, Mauro Icardi, 23. The Italian club have told his agent –Wanda Nara, who also happens to be his wife – that they won’t stand in his way if he leaves but they won’t let him go cheaply.
Atletico Madrid recently enquired about him but their interest waned when they were quoted a fee of €50m by Inter. Several Premier League clubs were also keen but as of yet, none of the interest has seen any genuine offers materialise.
Arsenal are different. Their desire is quickly turning to desperation as the north London club, famously cautious when it comes to transfer fees, cannot find the value for money which Arsene Wenger is so keen on.
Fresh reports over the weekend suggest that Higuain will cost Arsenal £50m plus Olivier Giroud but these were quickly dismissed.
Icardi, with 52 goals in 102 Inter appearances, is seen as a good alternative to the French international with no need to sell a striker whose appearances for France this summer were widely praised.
Whether Wenger sees a player with a chequered past as a good investment at £50m remains to be seen.
