Saido Berahino, 22, may get his long-held wish to move away from the Hawthorns finally granted. Crystal Palace have shown interest after negotiations between Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion stalled over the £15m fee demanded by the Baggies.
A move to White Hart Lane fell through last summer when Tottenham balked at paying the £25m fee Albion were seeking. It led to Tony Pulis dropping the striker at the start of the season, claiming the player was unsettled by events. Berahino and the club reconciled after intemperate comments on social media earned him a substantial fine.
However, his form suffered, managing just seven goals in 32 appearances, compared to 20 in 45 during the 2014/15 season.
Berahino’s rise to Premier League football is a testament to his determination. Arriving in Britain as a refugee from the war in Burundi, he earned ten GCSE’s and excelled at other sports before signing for West Brom. He has made 146 appearances for Albion and been capped by England at every junior level.
After being called up to the senior squad for the matches against Slovenia and Scotland in 2014, Berahino was expected to make his debut during 2015/16 but the dip in his form has raised questions over whether he will rise to the very top of the English game.
A move away from the west Midlands may prove the catalyst for the youngster to reach his potential with Everton and Watford also monitoring the situation.
