FC Barcelona have been connected with moves for defenders for quite a while now. Even though the presence of Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano shows decent depth at the position, Los Blaugranas want more. And have reportedly found their latest target in the English Premier League.

According to a report from the Mirror, Barcelona are likely to engage into a bidding war in order to acquire Virgil van Dijk from Southampton. The Dutch international is heralded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and he came close to leave the Saints during the summer as Liverpool were reportedly interested in the play.

The Southampton star was determined to join the Reds last summer, but the sour relationship between the Saints and the Merseysiders meant a deal was impossible. Chelsea and Manchester City also appeared as potential alternatives for van Dijk, but the Dutch had set his heart on a move to Anfield so talks stalled rather quickly.

It is believed Liverpool still want van Dijk, and that the defender still wants to land at Anfield. But things might change if Los Blaugranas get involved in the negotiations. They have enough money to throw around after selling Neymar to PSG during the summer, and they could easily beat Liverpool for the signature of the star defender. Recent reports have indicated Southampton want at least £50 million for the 26-year-old.

But van Dijk is not the only defender that could arrive to Barcelona, however, as Palmeiras star Yerry Mina will join the team in January. Although considering the former’s experience in one of the best leagues in the world, there is no question van Dijk would be able to challenge for a starting spot at Camp Nou as soon as he arrives.
