Olympique Marseille are to return to Chelsea with a bid for striker Olivier Giroud, 31, reports talkSPORT.

The former Arsenal striker rejected a move to the Ligue Un club earlier this summer, preferring instead to remain at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place.

However, new Blues head coach Maurizio Sarri plumped for Alvaro Morata, 25, in his starting line-up at Huddersfield on Saturday. Despite the Spaniard not scoring, Giroud remained an unused substitute during Chelsea’s comprehensive 3 – 0 victory.

The France international moved to West London during the January transfer window for £13m transfer from the Gunners.

Giroud won a World Cup winner’s medal in Russia this summer, impressing with his displays despite not scoring. Since moving to Chelsea, Giroud managed five goals in eighteen mainly substitute appearances.

Any move is complicated by the Premier League club’s inability to sign a replacement. However, with Tammy Abraham retained and Eden Hazard capable of playing centrally, Sarri has options if he needs them.

Marseille are keen to improve on last season’s fourth-placed finish in Ligue Un and return to the Champions League. Only the top three in France reach Europe’s elite competition and despite being former European Champions, haven’t reached the Champions League since 2013-14.
