FC Barcelona have been considered the front-runners to sign Arthur for quite a while now. And while talks between Barca and Gremio seemed to cool off as the January transfer window advanced, now it seems both parties are close to reach an agreement.
In fact, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that is reporting that Barcelona have agreed to a deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Arthur from Gremio. The 21-year-old midfielder is considered one of the hottest prospects in South America, and many experts have already dubbed as “the new Xavi” due to his composure, passing ability, and technique.
Arthur gained worldwide notoriety during the 2018 Copa Libertadores, as he was the Man of the Match in the final 2-1 triumph over Lanus. Barca have been looking at him closely for quite a while, and now the aforementioned report indicated that the Catalans would bring the talented midfielder to Camp Nou in January 2019.
There are a few hurdles to overcome first, though. The most important one would be the acquisition of a Portuguese passport for Philippe Coutinho, because right now Barca do not have any more spots for players from non-EEA countries at the moment. But if that is not doable, then Barca would have to let someone go before acquiring Arthur.
Chelsea were another team that were heavily linked with the Brazilian. However, right now it seems Barca’s battle to lose.
