It’s been a miserable week for Alexis Sanchez with Chile’s failure to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals. The 28-year-old will be 33 by the time FIFA’s circus pitches up in Qatar – or wherever they are held – in 2022 and arguably, Sanchez will be past his prime.

One thing’s for certain: he won’t be an Arsenal player. With Manchester City hovering, Paris St Germain are making a late bid to whisk the mercurial Chilean to Ligue Un. While the player’s relationship with Pep Guardiola is thought to be a decisive factor, PSG’s Brazilian contingent are making no secret of their desire to see the player in the Parc des Princes week in, week out.

Fresh from kicking Sanchez from pillar to post during the final and decisive World Cup qualifier, Dani Alves declared to Cooperativa, “Several teams want him; it’s quite something to be wanted by several teams but if he joins us, it would be great.”

Neymar Jr made it clear to the PSG hierarchy that he wanted Sanchez signed but FFP complications meant a deal wasn’t possible last summer as they swooped for Kylian Mbappe as well.

Persuading Sanchez to move on a free transfer next summer is seen as the ideal solution with the French club keen to resolve issues arising from this summer.

Club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi also has the unwanted attentions of Swiss prosecutors to deal with. As part of the investigation into former FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke, Al-Khelaifi is accused of bribing the Swiss over the broadcast rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cup finals.

Signing Alexis Sanchez may not be quite so high on his list…
