Arsenal have a dire need to improve their defensive line during the January transfer window. With Gabriel Paulista at Valencia and the impeding retirement of Per Mertesacker, The Gunners need to bolster their defensive corps.

One name that has been mentioned with frequency for the Emirates Stadium outfit is Nikola Maksimovic. The Serbian centre-back is currently playing for Serie A side Napoli, but does not feature regularly for the Italian. In fact, he is behind Raul Albiol, Kalidou Koulibaly and Vlad Chiriches in the pecking order.

As Arsene Wenger considers to sell at least one of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil during the upcoming transfer window, reinvesting the funds in the Serbia international sounds like a good idea. He has not been able to settle in Italy, but is loaded with talent and has drawn comparisons to former Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic.

Maksimovic joined the current Serie A leaders for €25m in August 2016, but is yet to prove his worth after failing to adapt to Maurizio Sarri’s tactics. And he has reportedly been made available since Sarri no longer counts with him at the Stadio San Paolo.

Inter Milan are also thought to be interested, but Arsenal are the clear favourites to land him even though no offer has been submitted yet.
