Tottenham Hotspur were rebuffed as they attempted to act swiftly ahead of the January transfer window, reports the Daily Mirror.

Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio is Mauricio Pochettino’s target with questions hanging over the future of Erik Lamela who is becoming frustrated at not holding down a regular place in the starting line-up.

The north London outfit claimed an unwanted Premier League record last summer when they became the first member club which failed to sign a single player during the main transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to strengthen his squad this winter especially as the Lilywhites scraped into the last sixteen of the Champions League thanks to Inter Milan’s failure to beat PSV Eindhoven earlier in the week.

The report claims Liverpool implausibly had a bid for £160m rejected during the summer. Jurgen Klopp is said to be keen to renew his interest for the 22-year-old Spain international.

Juventus are also interested in Asensio.

However, all three face a difficult task in convincing Asensio to leave the Bernabeu. According to reports in the Spanish media, “his only goal is to succeed at Real Madrid”.
