Arsenal, set to miss out on England’s 29 year-old striker, Jamie Vardy, have turned their attention to Paris St. Germain’s Edinson Cavani, 29. The Uruguayan is leaving the French capital this summer and has already turned down a lucrative £500,000 per week move to the Chinese league.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic also leaving the Parc des Princes this summer, PSG are in the market for another striker and are considering activating Neymar Jr, 24, release clause. Reducing their wage bill is a key factor in that decision with Cavani also deemed surplus to requirements.
Arsene Wenger, frustrated at the delays over Vardy’s future, has already sanctioned exploratory talks with Cavani’s agent and the striker could be on his way to The Emirates. With no transfer fee to pay, Arsenal are free to make the Uruguayan the highest paid player at the club.
Cavani scored 81 in 148 appearances for PSG after he left Napoli in a €64m deal in 2013. Having been as prolific in Italy with 104 goals in 138 appearances, he has the finishing skills Arsenal are desperately looking for this summer.
Wenger wants an alternative to Olivier Giroud, 29. Despite his recent run of good form, the Arsenal manager was frustrated when his compatriot failed to score in a run of fifteen matches which saw the Gunners title and cup dreams evaporate last season.
