The tempestuous relationship between Jose Mourinho and the Manchester United board is set to be tested further as the Portuguese scouts Fiorentina central defender Nikola Milenković during the international break.
talkSPORT reports the 20-year-old is on Mourinho’s radar for the January transfer window as he looks to strengthen his defence. With Serbia facing Montenegro, it also affords the United boss the opportunity to run the rule over Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinković-Savić, 23, who has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
It’s been a troubling period for Mourinho with reports last weekend that he was about to sacked by the board, irrespective of the result against Newcastle United. The directors stepped back from the edge as United retrieved a two-goal deficit to win 3 – 2 at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Milenković moved to Florence in May 2017 for €5m making 25 first-team appearances since. Having made his debut in a 3 – 0 defeat to Qatar in 2016, the centre-back learned his trade with the Under-21s. He returned to the full squad in time to be named not only in the Serbia squad but also feature in their three group matches.
Whether Mourinho will still be in charge at Manchester United to oversee any January deals remains to be seen.
