AC Milan secured the services of Gonzalo Higuain and Matteo Caldara earlier this week. They also signed Alen Halilovic earlier during the transfer window, but they are not done yet. Now, the Milan-based side is keen to make an approach for a player that’s eager to leave Real Madrid.

You guessed it: we are talking about Mateo Kovacic. The Croatia international spoke to Julen Lopetegui and once again confirmed his desire to leave the Santiago Bernabeu outfit due to the lack of playing time and the stiff competition for a first-team role. And one of the teams that would be keeen to make a move for the former Inter Milan star are AC Milan.

The Rossoneri side will participate in the UEFA Europa League and they feel Kovacic is the missing piece in midfield, as he can bring some much-needed stability and a presence on both ends of the pitch. He also knows what is like to thrive in Europe, as he has played an integral role in Real Madrid’s recent European glory.

At the very least, Kovacic would have an easier path towards playing time if he joins Milan. He is a clear upgrade over other in-house alternatives such as Franck Kessie, Lucas Biglia and veteran Riccardo Montolivo.

Both clubs are yet to establish talks regarding a potential transfer, but Real Madrid should at the very least listen what Milan want to offer. Otherwise, they might risk at losing Kovacic for free once his current deal expires.
