Steve Bruce told Tottenham that their chances of signing Jack Grealish cheaply are non-existent, reports Reuters.

Speaking ahead of the opening Championship weekend of the season, the Aston Villa boss claimed Tottenham have yet to make a formal bid for the precociously talented midfielder.

The 22-year-old was pivotal in the Villans promotion push last season but with the financial problems of the previous owner, was expected to leave for the Premier League this summer.

Bruce didn’t rule out that eventuality.

“At the moment, Spurs haven’t got anywhere near what the owners want to even consider, so there’s not a discussion to be had,” he told the media today.

“I don’t think we’ve had a formal bid. The one thing that the owners have made pretty clear is no one is for sale. We don’t want to lose our best players.”

With the impending closure of the transfer window, it’s now a sellers’ market. Bruce is under no illusions that if Tottenham up their offer, Grealish may leave Villa Park.

“The owners are aware that every player has got his price,” Bruce acknowledged.

“The good thing they have been able to do is not let anybody go on the cheap. So, if somebody wants to come and buy one of our players then they are going to have to find a premium and make sure that the owners are comfortable with that.”

Tottenham have yet to strengthen their squad with fans becoming increasingly concerned that the new stadium is preventing Mauricio Pochettino from adding to his squad.
